সত্যজিৎ ও মৃণাল Satyajit and Mrinal

 একই সময়ের সেরাদের দুজন ছিলেন মৃণাল সেন ও সত্যজিৎ রায়। একে অন্যের ছবি নিয়ে কাটাছেঁড়া করেছেন পত্রিকার পাতায়। তাঁদের সম্পর্ক নিয়ে চালু ছিল নানা গল্প।

Two of the best of the time were Mrinal Sen and Satyajit Roy. They have torn each other's pictures on the pages of the newspaper. There were many stories about their relationship.

সত্যজিৎ রায়ের বাড়িতে আড্ডা…

সত্যজিৎ রায়-মৃণাল সেনকে ঘিরে বাঙালি একটা সময় ভাগ হয়ে গিয়েছিল। কে সেরা—এই নিয়ে তর্ক হতো। আর দুই পরিচালকের তর্ক হতো পত্রিকার পাতায়। সেটা কখনো পৌঁছাত তিক্ততার পর্যায়েও। ‘আকাস কুসুম’ ঘিরে ১৯৬৫ সালে তাঁদের মতবিরোধ এতটাই চরমে গিয়েছিল যে শুধু এটা নিয়ে পত্রিকায় আসত হাজারো চিঠি। আবার মৃণাল সেনের বহু প্রশংসিত ‘ভুবন সোম’-এর কঠোর সমালোচনা করেছিলেন সত্যজিৎ। বছর পাঁচেক আগেও এক সাক্ষাত্কারে এ নিয়ে নিজের ক্ষোভ প্রকাশ করেছিলেন মৃণাল, ‘কিছুটা আনচ্যারিটেবল লেগেছিল তো বটেই। তবে প্রত্যুত্তরে সেটা বলিনি। শ্রদ্ধার সঙ্গেই জবাবটা দিয়েছিলাম। এর পর মানিকবাবু একদিন ফোন করলেন। বললেন, এত ভালোভাবে গুছিয়ে বলছেন। আমাকে তো আপনি লজ্জায় ফেলে দিলেন। আমি বললাম, এই রিভিউতে তো লজ্জায় পড়লাম আমি। আর একটা কথা মানিকবাবু বলি, চাইলে আপনাকে কিন্তু কড়া দু-চার কথা শুনিয়ে দিতে পারতাম। আমি এতটা আক্রমণাত্মক হতে চাইনি। উনি তখন বললেন, একদিন দেখা হলে ভালো হতো। আমি তখন সাফ বললাম, আপনার চারপাশে এত স্তাবকের দল আছে যে সাহসে কুলায় না।’ তবে দেখা ঠিকই হয়েছিল দুই পরিচালকের, হয়েছিল অনেকবারই। তৈরি হয়েছিল একটা সম্পর্কও। তবে প্রথম দেখার কথাটা বিশেষভাবে মনে পড়ে মৃণালের, ‘ওঁর বাড়িতে গেলাম। উনি বোধ হয় নিমাইকে [ঘোষ] আগেই বলে রেখেছিলেন, সে ছবি তুলেছিল। আমার আর মানিকবাবুর এই ধরনের ছবি বোধ হয় এই একটাই আছে।’ সত্যজিত্পুত্র সেদিনের ছোট সন্দীপ রায়ের মনে আছে সেসব আড্ডার কথা, ‘বহুবার আমাদের বাড়িতে এসেছেন। বাবার সঙ্গে আড্ডার সময় আমি মাঝেমধ্যে উঁকি দিতাম। বাবা মারা যাওয়ার পর কিছুজনকে উনি বলেছিলেন, আমার কথা বলার লোকটাই চলে গেল। বাবা যখন হাসপাতালে, বহুবার দেখতেও এসেছেন।’

Chat at Satyajit Ray's house...

Bengalis were once divided around Satyajit Ray-Mrinal Sen. There was an argument about who was the best. And the two directors used to argue on the pages of the newspaper. It sometimes reached the point of bitterness. In 1965, their disagreement over 'Akas Kusum' reached such an extreme that thousands of letters were sent to newspapers about it alone. Again Satyajit severely criticized Mrinal Sen's much acclaimed 'Bhuvan Som'. Mrinal expressed his anger about this in an interview five years ago, "It was a bit uncharitable." But I did not say that in the reply. I gave the answer with respect. After that Manikbabu called one day. He said, saying it so well. You put me to shame. I said, I was ashamed of this review. One more thing, Manikbabu, if you want, I could give you two or four harsh words. I didn't mean to be so aggressive. He then said, it would be nice to meet one day. I said clearly then, there are so many people around you who don't have the courage. A relationship was formed. But Mrinal remembers the first thing he saw, 'I went to his house. He must have told Nimai [Ghosh] earlier that he took the picture. I think there is only one such picture of me and Manikbabu. Satyajitputra, the little Sandeep Roy of that day, remembers those conversations, 'many times he came to our house. I used to peek in occasionally while chatting with my father. After my father died, he told some people, the person who spoke to me was gone. When the father is in the hospital, he has come to visit many times.

ক্রমেই সত্যজিতের সঙ্গে সম্পর্কটা অনেকটাই স্বাভাবিক হয়। এ নিয়ে বলতে গিয়ে মৃণাল বলেন, “একবার আমার কান ফেস্টিভালে যাওয়ার কথা। বিজয়া রায় ফোন করে বললেন, ‘গীতা, ও (সত্যজিৎ রায়) এখন লন্ডনে। কানে যাবে একটা প্রাইজ নিতে। সঙ্গে কোনো স্যুটটুট নেই। থ্রি পিসও পরে না। একটা পায়জামা-পাঞ্জাবি পাঠাচ্ছি। মৃণালবাবুর মনে না-ও থাকতে পারে। তুমি একটু মনে করে দিয়ে দেবে?’ আমরা সেই পোশাক নিয়ে কানে পৌঁছলাম। জিনিসটি মানিকবাবুর হাতে দিয়ে জিজ্ঞাসা করলাম, এত ঢোলা পায়জামা পরেন কী করে? উনি বললেন, ‘ও আমার হয়ে যাবে!’ আরেকবার আমি মুম্বাই থেকে গুজরাট যাচ্ছি। ‘ভুবন সোম’-এর শুটিং। মানিকবাবুকে বললাম, গীতা একটা প্যাকেট পাঠাবে। আপনি তো মুম্বাই আসছেন। নিয়ে আসতে পারবেন? তো সেই প্যাকেট নিয়ে মানিকবাবু মুম্বাই এলেন। হোটেলে ডেকে আমার হাতে দিলেন। ওঁর সামনেই প্যাকেট খুললাম। বেরিয়ে এলো কয়েক জোড়া গোঁফ। সেই গোঁফ, যা আমি শেখর চট্টোপাধ্যায়কে ‘ভুবন সোম’-এ পরাব। তাই দেখে মানিকবাবু অবাক...বললেন, ‘বলেন কী, শেষ পর্যন্ত আমাকে দিয়ে গোঁফ আনালেন। আমি ভাবলাম টাকা-পয়সা হবে। কত যত্ন করে নিয়ে এলাম’...সম্পর্ক মানে এই রকমই।”

Gradually the relationship with Satyajit became very normal. Talking about this, Mrinal said, “Once I am supposed to go to the Cannes Festival. Vijaya Roy called and said, 'Gita, he (Satyajit Roy) is now in London. Go to Cannes to get a prize. There is no suit too. Don't even wear a three-piece. I am sending a pajama-Punjabi. Mrinalbabu may not remember. Will you give it to me?' We reached Kan with that dress. Handing the thing over to Manikbabu, I asked, how do you wear such a loose pajama? He said, 'She will be mine!' Another time I am going from Mumbai to Gujarat. The shooting of 'Bhuvan Som'. I said to Manikbabu, Geeta will send a packet. You are coming to Mumbai. What can you bring? So Manikbabu came to Mumbai with that packet. Called the hotel and gave it to me. I opened the packet in front of him. A few pairs of mustaches came out. The mustache, which I will wear on Shekhar Chatterjee in 'Bhuvan Som'. So Manikbabu was surprised...said, 'What did you say, finally he gave me a mustache. I thought it would be money. How carefully I brought it...that's what relationships mean.”

তবে সম্পর্কটা যত স্বভাবিকই হোক পেশাগত বিষয়ে সত্যজিতের প্রতি যথেষ্ট ক্ষোভও ছিল মৃণালের। ৯০তম জন্মদিনের আগে সাক্ষাত্কারে বলেছেন সমকালীন অন্য প্রতিভার প্রতি সত্যজিতের আরো সদয় হওয়া উচিত ছিল। মৃণাল বলেন, ‘যত দিন পর্যন্ত জানা আছে, এ আমার চেয়ারে ওপরে উঠবে না, ততক্ষণ পিঠ চাপড়ানো যায়। যে মুহূর্তে আমি জানি, এ আমাকে ছাড়িয়ে যেতে পারে, তখন আমি আর হাতটা তুলব না। বলে না, বেশি বড় হয়ে গেলে অনেক মুশকিল হয়। ওঁকে পাল্টা প্রশ্ন করতে গেলেই উত্তেজিত হয়ে যেতেন।’ মৃণাল সেনের মতে, ক্যারিয়ারের প্রথম ১০ বছর অসাধারণ সব ছবি করেছেন সত্যজিৎ। ‘পথের পাঁচালী’ তাঁর মতে পারফেক্ট ছবি। তবে সবচেয়ে পছন্দের ‘অপরাজিত’, “সত্যজিতের শ্রেষ্ঠ ছবি আমার মতে ‘অপরাজিত’। আজও কী অসম্ভব সমকালীন! আহা, আমি যদি এ রকম একটা ফিল্ম বানাতে পারতাম।”

However, no matter how natural the relationship was, Mrinal had enough anger towards Satyajit in professional matters. In an interview before his 90th birthday, Satyajit should have been kinder to other contemporary talents. Mrinal said, 'As long as it is known, it will not rise up on my chair, so long as it can be patted on the back. The moment I know it can overtake me, I don't raise my hand. Not saying, it is very difficult when you grow up. He used to get excited when I went to ask him questions. According to Mrinal Sen, Satyajith made all the wonderful films in the first 10 years of his career. According to him, 'Pather Panchali' is a perfect film. But the most favorite is 'Aparajit', "According to me, Satyajit's best film is 'Aparajit'. What is impossible today! Oh, I wish I could make a film like that.”
